2017 C3: CONFERENCE FOR CREATIVE CONTENT - APRIL 29 TO MAY 1
"FUTURE FORWARD" AS C3 HIGHLIGHTS FESTIVAL OPENING WEEKEND
Visual Communications (VC) presented the seventh edition of C3: Conference for Creative Content, the premiere Asian American media arts conference on April 29 - May 1, 2017, during the 33rd edition of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. The only event of its kind, this year’s C3 theme was FUTURE FORWARD, bringing together the foremost media professionals in film, television, cable, digital and transmedia to create a dialogue on the ever-changing media industry, share best practices, network, celebrate and build a collective vision for our community.
The 2017 C3: Conference for Creative Content featured three days of panels at the Aratani Central Hall, Japanese American National Museum and Ari Hall, Korean Cultural Center; and receptions at the Weingart Foyer & Hirasaki Garden of the Japanese American National Museum, the courtyard of the Union Center for the Arts, and the Korean Cultural Center allowing for conference guests to network with each other in an informal atmosphere.
Beginning with the opening panel “Directing Horror & Genre” through to the final panel of the conference, “Independent Filmmaking in the Era of Digital Distribution,” the 2017 C3 brought together over 40 professionals representing directing, producing, writing, and various technical aspects of the motion picture, television and digital industry. A large, attentive audience of fellow media professionals, filmmakers, entertainment guild members, and Festival Week goers gained considerable insight into the craft, business, and even politics of creative content making as seen through the inclusion of a diverse and impressive array of panelists and moderators.

Among the highlights of the 2017 C3 was the politically-charged panel, “Media and Social Change”. As this panel took place on the exact date marking the 25th anniversary of the LA Uprising, moderator Phil Yu (ANGRY ASIAN MAN) discussed with filmmakers, academics and writers regarding how the increase in technological advancement has helped to shape the way communities of color have been portrayed in mass media and popular entertainment. Sponsored by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, the panel served as a means of catalyzing long-term, sustained actions for substantial change in the entertainment industry and media.
