Popular Youtube outfit Wong Fu Productions’ first feature film, Everything Before Us, will be released worldwide June 3 exclusively on Vimeo on Demand, it was announced this morning. The film first debuted theatrically on April 23, during the L.A. Asian Pacific Film Festival held in Los Angeles, and can be preordered now on Vimeo.
The directorial debut of Wong Fu founders Philip Wang and Wesley Chan,Everything Before Us is a science fiction/romantic drama set in a world in which one’s romantic history is documented and scored like a credit rating, which accumulates over the course of one’s life. It follows two couples attempting to navigate the system’s various obstacles. The film was funded with a budget of $358,308, raised via Indiegogo.
Founded in 2003, Wong Fu Productions is one of the most popular Asian American channels on Youtube, with over two million followers on Youtube. The company has made a name for itself with high quality, short form videos often funded through branding partnerships that keep costs down.
Wong Fu Productions is only the latest in a slew of Youtube stars to make the jump to features with nontraditional distribution. Most notably, the first feature from the hugely popular comedy duo Smosh will be released on multiple platforms in July.
Everything Before Us Stars Aaron Yoo (The Tomorrow People), Ki Hong Lee(Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Randall Park (The Interview), Brandon Soo Hoo(Tropic Thunder), Brittany Ishibashi (Political Animals) and Victoria Park (Ravens Touch). Untitled Entertainment, which manages Wong Fu Productions, brokered the deal with Vimeo.
