“We invite you to celebrate our Asian Pacific American and international artists at the 2020 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival,” says Francis Cullado, Visual Communications’ Executive Director. “Building off a successful 2019 Festival that included the World Premieres of YELLOW ROSE, EMPTY BY DESIGN, and HAPPY CLEANERS, and the LA premieres and screenings of THE FAREWELL, MS. PURPLE, BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, PLUS ONE, along with documentary winners FOR SAMA and OUR TIME MACHINE, the next edition of the Festival will continue to showcase the exciting and emerging cinema. Visual Communications' continues to champion diverse stories of our Asian Pacific creative communities and invite you all to submit your cinematic works to the Festival.”
Additionally, HBO announced today the call for submissions for its annual Asian Pacific American Visionaries (APAV) Short Film Competition, which opens Sunday, September 15 at 9am PST. Established in 2016, HBO Visionaries provides an unprecedented platform for emerging filmmakers to share their unique and diverse perspectives of the community. Now in its fourth year, APAV serves to showcase cinematic storytellers of Asian and Pacific Islander descent awarding the top three winners with cash prizes and the opportunity to have their projects premiere on HBO (and/or its on-demand, digital and/or social platforms), following their theatrical screening at the 2020 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. For this year’s competition, HBO is seeking emerging storytellers whose works respond to this year’s theme of Breaking Barriers. Films should provide a unique lens into the challenges and victories of overcoming obstacles from the perspective of an Asian Pacific American cinematic storyteller. Learn more about eligibility and guidelines at hbovisionaries.com.
Filmmakers interested in submitting to LAAPFF and the HBO APA Visionaries Short Film Competition are invited to submit at vcmedia.org/submit.
Visual Communications, the nation's first Asian Pacific American media arts center that annually presents LAAPFF, will also be celebrating its 50th year anniversary in 2020.
Throughout the years, the Festival has partnered with great cinema venue collaborators including the Directors Guild of America, Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, Japanese American National Museum, Regal L.A. LIVE: A Barco Innovation Center, and other venues throughout Los Angeles.
