AWC Vol. 2023 & HITO HATA Screening at the Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA)

Back in 2022, we took our 2023 Armed With a Camera (AWC) fellows and staff to Hawai'i for a rest and renewal retreat. Fast forward to 2024, VC is thrilled to announce we will be going back to Hawai'i to present a collection of films at the Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA) from May 23-26, 2024!

The program lineup includes HITO HATA: RAISE THE BANNER (1980), a VC produced film, and Armed With a Camera Vol. 2023 – including all six films from our AWC Pasifika class! We're excited to partner with HoMA to celebrate the culture, creativity, and diversity of our community during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Join us in the celebration! General admission is $15 for each respective program. Learn more and purchase tickets below!

HITO HATA: RAISE THE BANNER
Hito Hata: Raise the Banner is the first feature-length film made by and about Asian Pacific Americans. Directed by Robert A. Nakamura and Duane Kubo, HITO HATA captures the contributions and hardships of Japanese Americans from the turn-of-the-20th century.

ARMED WITH A CAMERA VOL. 2023
The 2023 Fellows are comprised of filmmakers of Pasifika descent who have produced six heartfelt pieces from the diaspora. With settings ranging from a kitchen in Utah to the ‘āina of Hawai’i, these films reveal that the ties that bind the filmmakers together as children of the moana are ancestral connection, family and a little food for the soul.
