Meet a VC Intern: Dana Worrell
/Learn about one of VC’s 2024 Summer Interns, Dana Worrell, our Archive Preservations Intern!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi! I’m Dana Worrell and I’ve joined VC as the Getty Marrow Archive Preservations Intern! I am a UCLA fourth year double majoring in Sociology & Gender Studies, and minoring in Community Engagement and Social Change.
At UCLA I am involved with many community art spaces including Cultural Affairs Commission, as the Arts Restoring Community Programs Director, and Artistic Activism Coalition, as the Marketing Director.
My passion for the arts started when I was young, and has definitely guided the path of my life today. Dancing has been a love of mine since childhood, and in college, I have participated in competitive dance teams and taught dance classes. Most recently, I performed in UCLA’s World Arts & Cultures/Dance Department’s student showcase, WACsmash, this past spring. These past few years I have been most involved with street forms of dance and I love collaborating with friends to create dance pieces.
How did you hear about Visual Communications and what drew you to apply?
Creative expression such as dance has always appealed to me because of its storytelling nature. This past year, I was able to approach storytelling in a new way through research. As an Undergraduate Research Fellow, my independent study focused on cultural identity, belonging, and legitimacy for Asian-mixed multiracial individuals. After filming seven in-depth interviews of Asian-mixed UCLA students, I compiled a short video of our conversations. The process for this research project introduced me to the intersection of media and identity. And once I read about VC's community programs and core values, I knew that this would be an epic space to be a part of!
What do you hope to learn from this internship?
I can't wait to interact with community archives and better understand how the engagement of these resources empowers and informs communities today. I want to learn all about VC's impactful history in Southern California's AAPI communities and its continued contributions. All in all, absorbing all the information and knowledge from working at VC, with the Archives, and with the staff and fellow interns!!
