Meet a VC Intern: Kimmy Rice

Learn more about one of our 2023 VC Summer Interns, Kimmy Rice, our Archives Intern!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My name is Kimmy Rice (she/her/hers), I’m from Oxnard, California, and I am a rising senior at UCLA majoring in public affairs and geography. I also work for the UCLA student newspaper, the Daily Bruin, where I am currently serving as co-chief of the Copy section. In my downtime, you can find me at a coffee shop working on passion projects or at the gym playing volleyball!

How did you hear about Visual Communications and what drew you to apply?

While sifting through the huge list of Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship opportunities, Visual Communications was one of the organizations that stood out to me the most. Although my course of study has been mostly focused on urban planning, I had previously taken courses in Asian American studies that pushed me toward pursuing a path in cultural studies, movements, community organizing, and social justice. I greatly admired VC’s embodiment of these values, and I felt that this was the perfect opportunity for me to further explore my Asian American identity, expand my knowledge of AAPI history, and experience the field of arts and culture.

What are your duties at VC? Which part(s) do you find most interesting?

Because the Archives department is so dense and multifaceted, I’ve worked on many different projects in my time here and have learned so many different workflows and skills. I’ve worked on drafting copy, digitizing archival materials, podcast and video production, and event planning. My time digging through the archives has been the most interesting because I’ve come across photos and videos of historical events and movements that I hadn’t known of before. I often find myself researching these unfamiliar histories and falling down research rabbit holes, and that has been the most exciting and valuable part of the job thus far.

How do you describe your experience working at VC so far? Any memorable moments?

I would describe the VC experience as dynamic — there’s something new going on every day, which makes for an atmosphere that is never boring. The tight-knit staff members are always having fun and interesting conversations, which makes the working environment so much more lively and welcoming.

One of my favorite memories is VC hosting the GMUI Learning Community tour of Little Tokyo. It was great to connect with other interns from around LA and hear about their work while walking around the neighborhood together. It was a fun day filled with community building, exploration, and great food!

What song(s) did you add to the “VC Office” playlist?

This is my first sunny summer in Los Angeles, so I’ve been listening to a lot of upbeat indie-pop. Some songs I’ve added to the “VC Office” playlist are Shampoo Bottles by Peach Pit, Clementine by Sun Room, and Hell N Back by Bakar. My theme song for the summer is definitely West Coast Love by Emotional Oranges; if summer was a song, this would be it!

We look forward to working with Kimmy this summer and witnessing all of her contributions to the VC family!
