Meet a VC Archives: Artist in Residence - Mia Barnett
/Learn about one of VC archives’ inaugural cohort of Artists in Residence, Mia Barnett!
What inspired you to pursue film/media arts
I’ve been interested in social justice in some capacity since childhood, probably inspired by involvement in Girl Scouts and the service projects we did. And then while working at Blockbuster in high school, I got really into watching documentaries (since I could rent them for free and this was prior to streaming). I became fascinated with how documentaries can bring social justice issues to a wide audience and make them approachable and entertaining. I decided then that I wanted to make documentaries about issues I cared about, too.
What attracted you to the VC Archives?
I’m interested in the activism history of Little Tokyo, and VC has captured so much of that history. I couldn’t wait to dive into the interviews, photos, and documentation of events and actions that tell the rich history of the neighborhood.
What projects are you currently working on?
I’m shooting oral history interviews with sansei women activists with the intention of developing a short film. I’m also helping Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress digitize and archive their audiovisual materials from the past 40+ years.
What do you like to do during your free time? I like to explore city parks with my dog, work on jigsaw puzzles, and go to concerts and shows.
Favorite Films:
Grey Gardens
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Jurassic Park
Dream music festival lineup: Megan Thee Stallion, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, KATSEYE
Unpopular opinion: Frozen yogurt is gross and an insult to ice cream
Restaurant recommendation: Hong Kong Cafe (which is in Monterey Park, so I’m interpreting LA in a broad sense)
