April 4, 2017 – LOS ANGELES   Visual Communications (VC), the nation’s premier Asian Pacific American media arts center, announced its program of outstanding films and events for the upcoming 33rd edition of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF) running APRIL 27 – MAY 4, 2017. This encompassing annual film celebration is presented across the city of Los Angeles from Hollywood to Little Tokyo to the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles to Koreatown to Westwood to West Hollywood and to Buena Park in Orange County.

One of These LAAPFF 2017 Shorts Will Be Eligible for Consideration in the Academy Awards®

In December 2016, we were pleased to receive news from our friends at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences that the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival has been approved as an Academy Award®-qualifying festival for Short Film Awards. Recipient(s) of the Film Festival’s Golden Reel Award for Narrative Short Film will be eligible for consideration in the Animated Short Film/Live-Action Short Film category of the Academy Awards®. AWC Fellows Visit LAIKA Entertainment in Portland

This week our 2017 Armed with a Camera Fellows went to Portland to visit LAIKA Entertainment (KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, CORALINE, CORPSE BRIDE, PARANORMAN) for a studio tour. The Fellows observed all stages of a working stop motion animation studio, from LAIKA staff choosing different fabrics for costume design, to building the robot mechanisms for the puppets used in the films.
